I was walking home today and took a route I don't use very often. I came to a traffic light. Usual drill, press the button, wait for green person, etc. Come the magic moment a voice recording booms out from a speaker attached to the traffic lights:
"Traffic moving away from Xxxxxxxx. Traffic signal! Stop!"
Red for the cars, Mr Green for me. But as I was walking across the road I was thinking, "Why is this thing speaking to vehicles in the traffic? I'm all for integration but do we have blind drivers on the road?"

You may have blind pedestrians. We have one in my area that emits all sorts of odd noises for the couple of blind people living here who regularly cross there. Although ours speaks to the walkers, not the drivers. ;-)

That was the odd thing. I mean, I'm familiar with the snap, crackle and hop-across auralglyphics for the disabled, but a speaker bellowing at drivers was something else.
Of course I've been with a few taxi drivers who were colour-blind to traffic lights :-(

Ah. Maybe it was the taxi drivers the vocalizing traffic light was targeting.
